The Amiga is a family of personal computers sold by Commodore in the s and s. The first model, the A, was launched in and became popular for its graphical, audio and multi-tasking abilities. The Amiga provided a significant upgrade from 8-bit computers, such as the Commodore 64, and the platform quickly grew in popularity among computer enthusiasts.
The name "Amiga" was chosen because it is the Spanish word for female friend, and alphabetically it appears before Apple in lists of computer makers. It originated as a project code-named "Lorraine", therefore the female was used instead of the male and general version Amigo. The best selling model, the Amigawas introduced in and became one of the leading home computers of the late s and early s with approximately six million sold.
Finally, as the third generation, the A and the A were released in However, poor marketing and failure to repeat the technological advances of the first systems meant that the Amiga quickly lost its market share to competing platforms, such as the fourth generation game consoles, Apple Macintosh, and IBM PC compatibles. Based on the Motorola family of microprocessors, the machine has a custom chipset with graphics and sound capabilities that were unprecedented for the price, and a pre-emptive multitasking operating system called AmigaOS.
Although early Commodore advertisements attempt to cast the computer as an all-purpose business machine, especially when outfitted with the Amiga Sidecar PC compatibility addon, the Amiga was most commercially successful as a home computer, with a wide range of games and creative software. The platform became particularly popular for gaming and programming demos.
It also found a prominent role in the desktop video, video production, and show control business, leading to affordable video editing systems such as the Video Toaster. The Amiga's native ability to simultaneously play back multiple digital sound samples made it a popular platform for early "tracker" music software.
The relatively powerful processor and ability to access several megabytes of memory led to the development of several 3D rendering packages, including LightWave 3D and Aladdin 4D. The demise of Commodore has been commonly attributed to numerous factors such as poor marketing, a lack of sufficient third party developers, and a failure to compete with cheaper PC clones with "multimedia" features and low-cost color-capable Macintosh models such as the Macintosh LC.

A federal judge ordered an injunction against Commodore preventing them from importing anything into the United States. Commodore had built up CD32 inventory in their Philippine manufacturing facility for the United States launch, but, being unable to sell the consoles, they remained in the Philippines until the debts owed to the owners of the facility were settled.
Commodore declared bankruptcy shortly afterwards, and the CD32 was never officially sold in the United States. However, imported models did come over the border from Canada, and many stores in the United States primarily mail-order stores imported units for domestic sale. During the long bankruptcy proceedings, Commodore UK also provided some hardware components and software for the American market, including production of the MPEG Video Module that was not officially released by Commodore International.
Although it was indeed the first such machine released in Europe and North America, the FM Towns Marty, a console released exclusively in Japan, beat it to market by seven months.
Ultimately, Commodore was not able to meet demand for new units because of component supply problems. Sales of the CD32 in Europe were not enough to save Commodore, and the bankruptcy of Commodore International in April caused the CD32 to be discontinued only months after its debut.A Founder.
From Crappy Games Wiki Uncensored. Amiga CD The system's controller was odd-looking and very flimsy. Many games also didn't bother to take advantage of it, with a lot of the straight A ports still using pad-up to jump because they were programmed with the common single-fire-button Amiga joysticks in mind.
The console was only on the market for a mere seven months. It was never released in the US, though the system could be obtained by mail order.
Commodore Amiga-CD32 ROMs
Most of the console's games were ports from the Amiga computer which is not strange since the console is literally just an Amiga in different box and with a weird controller. Pointless lockout. The lesson of not doing this had unfortunately eluded them. Speaking of which, the CD drive of the CD32 can sometimes fail to read discs when the disc hatch is closed, forcing the player to hold the disc hatch down or put something heavy on top of the CD32 to get the disc to spin. On that subject, this was the third time Commodore had attempted the trick of shoving an existing home computer in a box without a keyboard and pretending it was a console: the previous two were the fifth worst-selling console in history the CDTV and the worst-selling console in history the Commodore 64 Games System.
As the Amiga CD32 was essentially an A computer with extra components, it's possible to play all of the regular Amiga games with the SX-1 expansion, which allows players to plug in a keyboard and a floppy disk drive. This page was last edited on 14 Julyat Amiga CD32 "So, imagine a hyena'sThe death of Commodore meant that the CD32 never really had a fighting chance when it was released in It tried its best however, and while it featured a lot of ports, there are still plenty of great games for owners to collect.
Diggers Released: One of the bundled launch titles for the star-crossed console, Diggers followed the antics of four mining concerns on the planet Zarg as they competed, with the help of the user, to rob the world of its resources. The joypad provided a frustrating interface experience, but fortunately Millenium had the foresight to allow mouse control.
Clean, if uninspired, graphics and chirpy tunes made it an enjoyable title for the right gamer, but was probably a bad choice for a bundled game. It far, far better than its accompanying launch title Oscar mind you. Worms Released: Worms appears to have been released on practically every gaming platform known to man, so it should come as no surprise to learn that the CD32 received a version of its very own. It should also come as no surprise to learn that, like many other CD32 titles that have been mentioned on these two pages, Worms was pretty much identical to the original Amiga version.
Interestingly, a legal download of the CD32 version of Worms appears on the Dream17 website, so check it out at www. Also known as The Misadventures Of Flink, this game made full, unabashed use of the monumental storage space available on these new-fangled CD ROMs and greatly beneffited from it.
The whole thing gets kicked in the nads by a crippling lack of a save option, however. Damn shame about that. Yes sir. Those with a fetish for tough blasters would do well to track this down straight away. By keeping up the game speed and making the ship as controllable as possible, it elegantly camouflaged the somewhat limited gameplay and ticks all the right boxes for a proper console game, which, in retrospect, was exactly what the CD32 lacked and so desperately needed.
Alien Breed: Tower Assault Released: Team 17 was well known for going above and beyond the call of duty when it came to porting games across to the CD32, and the superb Tower Assault was no exception. Featuring an extremely lengthy intro, beautifully drawn sprites, a new retreat move that enabled you to walk backwards while firing, and plenty of over-the-top blasting action, Tower Assault was yet another excellent blaster from Team 17 and was perfectly suited to the CD In principle.
It may be little more than a port, but, with the greatly reduced loading times and superb voice acting, fans should snap it up straight away.
Zool Released: Zool is generally considered as one of the greatest Amiga platformers ever made — hardly surprising when it has no Mario or Sonic games — so it should come as no surprise to learn that the CD32 version was obviously the best incarnation of the bunch.
Go on. You know it makes perfect sense. Tags: alien breedbansheebeneath a steel skyCD32commodoredgenerationdiggersguardiansimon the sorcererwormszool.
